How Does Professional Radon Testing With Murphy Radon Work?
We’ve refined our testing process to be as transparent and unobtrusive as possible, ensuring you get accurate results without the stress.
We are committed to integrity and transparency. If your test results come back at or above the 4.0 pCi/L action level, we provide a clear, no-nonsense path forward. If your professional test indicates that a radon mitigation system is needed, we apply a $100 credit from your testing fee directly toward the cost of your Murphy Radon mitigation system.
OUR APPROACH
How Long Does Radon Testing Take?
The short answer is that a professional radon test takes approximately 48 hours to record the necessary data. However, the total process involves a few specific steps to ensure your results are accurate and “defensible.”

The 12-Hour “Prep” Phase
To get an accurate reading, the EPA requires “closed-house conditions” for at least 12 hours before we place the monitor.
The 48-Hour Professional Test
Once we set our Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM), it must remain undisturbed for a minimum of 48 hours.
Quick Results
Because we use professional digital monitors, we can download the data and provide you with a comprehensive report quickly.

How much does a professional radon test cost?
We offer fair pricing for radon testing, in line with competitor rates.
However, we believe you shouldn’t have to pay twice for your safety. If your test results show that mitigation is necessary, we apply a $100 credit from your testing fee directly toward your Murphy Radon mitigation system.
This ensures that your professional data is essentially an investment in the final solution.
Can Montana’s weather affect my radon test results?
Yes. During our cold winters, the warm air in your home rises and escapes through the roof, creating a vacuum in the lower levels. This vacuum literally sucks radon gas out of the soil and into your living space.
In addition, when the ground freezes or is covered in heavy snow, radon can’t escape through the soil outside. It takes the path of least resistance: the unfrozen, warm earth directly beneath your foundation.
Because we understand these local patterns, we can tell you if your “borderline” test result in July might actually be a dangerous level in January. We help you interpret the data within the context of Montana’s climate.
Why is professional radon testing better than a hardware store kit?
While a hardware store kit seems convenient and affordable, it often provides a false sense of security. These are typically passive charcoal tests – essentially a sponge that absorbs radon. If your basement is humid or if the kit sits in a hot mail truck on its way to the lab, the results can be significantly skewed.
Our active digital monitors (Continuous Radon Monitors) are the professional standard, offering precision tracking, tamper detection, and certified results that carry the weight needed for legal disclosures and real estate negotiations.
How often should I re-test for radon?
To ensure your home remains as safe as possible, you should re-test for radon every two years. This biennial benchmark is essential because radon levels are not permanent – they fluctuate based on the natural movement of the earth and the structural aging of your home.
Over time, new settling cracks in your foundation or shifts in the soil can create fresh pathways for gas to enter, potentially turning a previously “safe” home into one with elevated levels.
