How Do You Know If Your Radon System Needs Repair?
While most radon mitigation systems are designed to run quietly in the background, there are several clear warning signs that your system is no longer protecting you. If you notice any of the following signs, don’t wait to call in the experts at Murphy Radon, as levels can rise quickly if the fan isn’t doing its job.
OUR APPROACH
What Radon System Repairs Does Murphy Radon Offer?
When we tackle radon repair, we don’t just replace the fan, then assume all is well. We look at the health of the entire system to ensure it’s operating at peak efficiency.

Fan Replacement
Most radon fans have a lifespan of 10-15 years. If your fan has seized or become loud, we replace it with a high-efficiency model.
Low-voltage Fantech Repair
We have unique expertise with aging, non-standard legacy systems, performing replacements for older low-voltage.
How IT WORKS
Our Simple 4-Step Process
From initial consultation to verified results, we make radon repairs straightforward and stress-free.
Schedule Assessment
We’ll discuss your current system’s age, any recent home renovations, and the specific readings that seem off.
System Inspection
We inspect the radon fan for mechanical failure, check the U-tube manometer for pressure drops, and examine all visible piping.
Component Repair & Upgrading
We replace faulty components with industry-leading equipment, or make repairs, as needed.
Performance Testing
After the repairs are complete, we verify that the system is pulling a proper vacuum beneath your slab.
Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to common questions about radon repair costs, common issues, and overall effectiveness.
How long do radon fans usually last?
On average, a quality radon fan has a mechanical lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Because these fans are engineered to run 24/7, 365 days a year, they are incredibly durable. However, their longevity depends heavily on the environment.
In Western Montana, fans that have to move a lot of moisture or work against “tight” (non-porous) soil may wear out slightly faster. If your fan is over a decade old, has become noticeably louder, or is vibrating the PVC pipe, it is likely nearing the end of its life. Replacing it proactively can prevent a gap in your home’s protection.
My radon system is making a loud whistling sound. Is that dangerous?
A high-pitched whistling or hissing usually indicates a vacuum leak. This happens when the seal between the system pipe and your concrete slab has cracked, or if new cracks have formed in your foundation. While not an immediate emergency, it is a performance drain.
The fan is likely pulling conditioned air (the air you pay to heat or cool) out of your basement rather than pulling radon gas from the soil. This forces your furnace to work harder and reduces the system’s ability to lower radon levels. We can quickly locate and seal these leaks with professional-grade urethane sealants.
If I replace my radon system’s fan, do I need to re-test for radon?
Yes. The EPA and NRPP standards are clear: any time a major component of a mitigation system is altered or replaced, a follow-up test should be performed. Even if we replace your fan with the exact same model, slight variations in the installation or the static pressure can change how much gas is being moved.
A 48-hour professional test provides the “all-clear” documentation you need to ensure your family is still breathing safe air and keeps your records up to date for future real estate transactions.
Can I just buy a replacement radon fan online and install it myself?
While it may seem like a simple plumbing project, radon fans must be sized correctly for the specific static pressure of the soil beneath your home. Installing a fan that is too powerful can pull conditioned air out of your house or even cause backdrafting of your water heater or furnace (pulling carbon monoxide into the home).
As NRPP-certified professionals, we ensure the fan is matched to your home’s unique needs and that all electrical connections meet local building codes.
